H- Although we recognize the obvious economic benefits of Motorola’s new manufacturing facility in the rainforest region of southwestern India, on an environmental level the effects would be devastating.
Joe- Motorola has been involved with India since 1986, and has worked to improve their methods of preserving the well being of the environment. However, there are still many measures that need to be taken to ensure environmental, social, as well as economic success.
H- First, let’s talk environment. My name is Hannah Lodi and I am a representative from ________. To start, let me present several existing statistics (read statistics). The manufacturing facility would require thousands of hectares of rainforests to be cut down. Such deforestation not only destroys the natural habitat of thousands of species, but it devastates genetic diversity, causes the extinction of indigenous species, and affects nutrient cycling as well as the overall global climate.
Amy- --Which is where I come in. My name is Amy Kaufman, and my job is to come up with mutually beneficial solutions to potentially perilous issues concerning companies and their relations with other countries. An alternative to the construction of a new manufacturing facility in Madikeri and the destruction of the natural rainforest is to simply expand the existing research facility in the already industrialized city of Bangalore.
H- Okay/But/Well/So/Let’s say, hypothetically speaking, that the manufacturing facility is built nonetheless. Roads would then need to be built, employees would be driving to work on these roads, thus creating even more air pollution, in addition to the excess waste produced by the factory itself. The burning of excess materials and fossil fuels adds carbon to the atmosphere, which is why our planet is currently experiencing increased global warming.
Jess- While global warming is an important issue, I am more concerned about how the construction of a Motorola manufacturing facility will affect your life, be it at work or at home. I’m Jessica Elman and I’m here to protect your (turn to citizens) rights, which were supposedly promised to you when many countries, including India, signed the Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. The building of the manufacturing facility would provide you citizens with a reported 800 new job openings, but you may ask, “Can I trust Motorola to take care of me?” The answer to that seems to be yes. According to various sources, Motorola is very aware of the needs of its employees by giving them the benefits that are required under the law such as medical care, leave, and retirement benefits. In addition to that, the Bangalore facility has a child care center and even a class library (Pictures). However, I do not recommend that you get lost in the luxuries of work benefits and realize that Motorola has made unwise choices in the past concerning the well being of its workers. Motorola continues to refuse to halt their use of BFR’s-a toxic and hazardous substance used in the assembly of cell phones, as well as a substance which can affect your health in negative ways.
