hello!
so it's been 3 days. i really like our neighborhood. i've been walking around and things. i didn't even make it into the city until today. i was out looking for jobs so i did a lot of walking and wandering. i'm going to drop off some resumes at some bars and things tomorrow. here's hoping!
i went to open a bank account the other day and i had a lesson in accents. the woman who was helping me was very nice and we were chatting and then she went to get some papers. when she came back she said, "your social?" which sounded to me like, "ya social?" and so i said, "uhh, yeah kind of" immediately realizing she had of course been asking for my numbers. so that was fun.
new york kind of reminds me of tokyo. for example, yesterday holly and i got on the wrong train and i had the same realization as i did when i'd do that in japan. when you get on one of ones with real seats you first think how great it is that you get these comfy seats for a cheap train fare!! but then you realize that of course you are on the wrong one so we decide to get off, and holly makes it through the doors scott free. i, on the other hand, am encumbered with a bulky kitchen trash can and stick an arm in the closing door to no avail. i end up taking this thing to east new york while holly waited at the mall where we separated. it's one of those things where you get to the platform and see a train and think well either get on it or miss it. i did it today by myself, as well. the whole thing probably look a little less than an hour, and it was pretty fun.
our boxes aren't here yet and we don't have beds. i've fashioned a bed with couch cushions and comforters. but my room is ready to be inhabited! i set up a wall-mounted clothes holder. when i got home today there was some alarm going off in my building for like 5 hours. i don't know what it meant of anything but it finally stopped around 130 or so. odd.
