i was working yesterday and i came upon the nature of hype a couple of times that got me thinking. First, as a lot of you might know, yesterday was the release of the new Harry Potter book. to promote that, the girls that were working at Powells across the way were wearing these huge witches hats. now. i've never read a Harry Potter book. i'm not sure i'd be into it but i do know that this book has been so hyped, that a small forest has been cut down to advertise and promote this. is it really worth it? maybe. i see it like this. it's a rare thing that books are hyped these days. most people hype the less academic things like movies or tv shows. bravo to the hype deserved or not, i say.
But there are things that are way hyped that i just can't understand. Those of you who know me, know that i don't really like Pink Floyd. I've never understood WHY people like them. i like all the stuff of Syd Barrett era PF and even his solo stuff, but both Dark Side of the Moon and the Wall are some of the most overhyped and overrated albums of all time. granted, i am a huge minority in this opinion but really what's the big fuckin' deal? if i play the same note through echo and chorus and whatever sound effect money can buy for the next 2 min, is that good? plus, i'll never forgive them for the song "money". WTF? that has to be the most annoying song ever.
Hype, my friend, can be both deserved and undeserved. i just wish people could tone it down a bit. it makes me a bit sick, at times, of things i actually like. for instance the White Stripes. i like most of their stuff but if i see Jack White's face one more time, i'm going to kill that motherfucker. it just waters down a good thing.
