It's sort of like "risk-averse"... only I actually like taking certain (calculated) risks, and I don't like holiday-based, substance- or meaning-reducing surges in already over-inflated consumerism (even though I do like
consuming certain things anyway). I know you were expecting more of a
nice, anti-evil-V-day rant from me - but it's not February yet, so for now let's consider our first wintry excuses for gift-giving...
If only we could get what we actually need rather than things for the holidays, that would really be cause to consider them "holy"! It would certainly help me believe in miracles again...
Yes, there are a few hard-to-find dvds I might like to have, maybe a book or two, and of course the infamous ipod, which I gratefully
just received from the 'rents (and am enjoying immensely, largely due to my combined obsessions with music, convenient-&-useful-but-not-too-extravagant technology, and, um, sorting stuff)... but the truth is, the list of things I would actually appreciate goes a little something more like:
* waking up to discover that my tub and shower are suddenly and mysteriously completely clean despite my slackitude over the past however-long of not scrubbing them and also procrastinating on the use of liquid plumber
* checking my bank account online and finding that the peeps at the bank have in fact, promptly refunded the mistaken triple overdraft charges they recently assessed in response to the evil clerk of court posting a duplicate traffic ticket payment
* while we're on the subject, how about checking my bank account to find that not only has the duplicate traffic ticket charge been removed, but the actual traffic ticket charge has been "refunded as a courtesy of Washington Mutual, thank you for being a loyal customer"
* opening the fridge and finding a bottle of each of all my favorite yummy juices, a bag of my favorite pepperidge farm mint brussels cookies, and some kind of fabulous meal from a local restaurant I like that will easily last for three helpings...
Oh, wait, that last one came true! I guess that's just more proof for the old adage: if you want something done, you've got to do it yourself. Alright, the fabulous meal (leftovers) came from
galador42, thank you very much, but the bottom line is, you're the one with the power to make your dreams come true! Bwahahahahaaaa! Oh, but here he is with two more bottles of juice, yay! I guess Galador helps those who help themselves.
In other news, I think some researchers read a little too deeply into (and right past the actual reasons why we might have felt compelled to start)
torturing our dolls... at least it's nice to know that I wasn't the only one. ;-)
By the way, in case you're wondering, I did break down and decide to get myself a present this year, and believe it or not it involved actually paying for music after years of receiving free promos and trading MP3s:
The Best $3.70 I Ever Spent! Also, for reasons to give thanks (travel, exploration, & personal development through both), see what I bought myself around the time of Tofurkey Day:
The Best $1.06 I Ever Spent!
