My top 5 single moments in music that reaffirm my belief in God:
5) Vivaldi's "Magnificat", the "Et Misericordea" movement. The sopranos and altos sing a fuegal line that puts them into the dissonance of a second, the altos resolving it as only a romantic composer can.
4) U2's "Bad", the first time Bono screams the lyric "I'm wide awake".
3) Monte Montgomery's live version of "Romeo and Juliet", at the end of an virtuosic guitar solo ending with a mindblowing technical triplet riff built around harmonics, leading directly back into the main riff of the song.
2) Eric Whitacre's choral setting of ee cummings's "i thank You God for most this Amazing day", on the lyric "wings", when the girls of the chorus, divided into three, sing a gorgeous sixteenth note rhythm that begins in unison and ends with a cluster of two major seconds (C-D-E, I believe). They then close to the "ng" sound of "wing" and it sounds like liquid silver.
1) The chorus of "Blower's Daughter," when Damien Rice sings "Can't take my eyes off of you" the second time, at the top of his range, in a voice that sounds like he's begging for mercy.
