The format of the upcoming Grand Slam is (and is traditionally):
- 1st round = all of the poets who qualify (8, or all applicable poets. This year it's 9 poets)
- 2nd round = Top 7
- 3rd round = Top 6
Top 4 (or five if taking a 5 person team) are the team. This year it's top 4.
Scores are cumulative all the way through.
For some Slam geekery, this is supported by the following:
2005:
1st round 8
2nd round 7
3rd round 6
Cumulative all the way through
2006:
1st round 11
2nd round top 6
3rd round top 6 again
Cumulative all the way through.
2007:
1st round: 7 (must assume it would have been 8 if 8 poets had made it ot the Grand Slam)
2nd round: 7
3rd round: 6
Note:
2006 was an aberration, for whatever reason, but an aberration nonetheless. We typically shave it down from 8(+/-) to 7 to 6. This also has the benefit of giving us a good show, since we keep in a nice number of poets working their butts off throughout.
