The sound of laughter floated through the room, just loud enough to wake the Doctor. He got out of bed, walked to the open window and cautiously peered out so as not to be noticed by the two people in the yard. He knew that if Rose saw him she would immediately retreat into the house with her young brother. His mind drifted as he watched the pair playing on a swing set.
*~*~*~*~*
For the most part, the Doctor’s transition from Time Lord to human had gone smoothly. The Tylers - Jackie, Pete and little Tony - had welcomed him into their home as if he were one of the family. Jackie had nursed him through a bout of regeneration sickness that he had suffered for a few days post-metacrisis. And Pete had given him a job with Torchwood as soon as he was well enough to work, putting his vast knowledge of alien life forms and technology to good use.
But Rose was a different story. Despite their kiss on the beach she had distanced herself from him; she couldn’t believe that he was still her Doctor - only in human form. She barely spoke to him and whenever possible she would avoid him altogether. It became a common occurrence for Rose to drop whatever she was doing and leave the room if the Doctor should happen to enter.
A few weeks of living with the Tylers, the Doctor had suggested getting his own flat. Jackie resisted, telling him that she was certain Rose would come around with a bit more time. He wasn’t so sure though, and felt that moving out of the mansion would be for the best. Several days of discussion between them resulted in a compromise - the Doctor would move into one of the servants’ apartments. He would be far enough from Rose to relieve the tension in the main house, but still close enough for Jackie to keep a motherly eye on him. And the arrangement worked out well, although Rose showed no signs of even beginning to accept him.
*~*~*~*~*
A loud growl from his stomach brought the Doctor’s thoughts back to the present, and he reluctantly stepped away from the window to make himself some breakfast. He could still hear Tony squealing with joy as the eggs were frying; the sound seemed to mock him, serving as a reminder that he wasn’t welcome to join the fun. A wave of self-pity washed over him as he reflected on his situation. He missed his TARDIS and being able to travel any time and any place that he wanted. He missed his Time Lord physiology and hated the constant need for food and sleep that his human body needed. But most of all he missed his companions - for as much as Jackie and Pete cared for him he felt utterly alone and friendless.
After he had eaten the Doctor checked his emails, hoping for some sort of urgent situation at the office that would give him an excuse to go into work on his day off - but there was nothing. He then started to surf the Internet, looking for anything to distract him from his morose thoughts.
One hour later, he found it: An advertisement for the latest romance novel, currently on sale at a local bookstore. It wasn’t the novel itself that interested him, though. It was the name of the author.
An idea started to form in his head and smiled a bit. He figured he just might have found a way to get past his loneliness. It was time for him to stop sitting around his flat and live a life outside of the Tyler family. He set to task searching for names, jotting down information as he found the people he was looking for.
