Thing is you could criticize Frings slowness. There's no denying that. When bashing Frings, most commentators forgot to mention the lack of options for TS - and considering this, we did well. I mean, do they want Silvestre back or Hunt/Bargfrede as CB. Their pace was needed in midfield. And the trick with Wesley jumping in wherever needed though risky looking did work. And of course Frings will have problems with keeping the position. It is an intricate thing to keep the line of four steady. And sure he was going to loose some battles. But we gained more pressure on the wings by that maneuver and got more offense on the pitch.

So the not-scoring part is what actually leaves me worry. Like you said, it did look promising and by one strike we would have seen a different game.
A sweeper is what u might know as Libero - someone who plays infront of the last two centre backs. I think Beckenbauer played that part to perfection. He is a defensive midfielder who can plays more versatile. He can intiate the game, attack and clean up infront of the CB's. It's very old-fashioned though and considered outdated and people hardly do that anymore. So it was a bit of football nostalgia right there. Again -- the whole formation was in constant flux - actually fuckin' awesome.

Yeah, I'm with you there, and I understand when people criticise him for not being fast enough. I've just read a bit too much Frings bashing lately. I'm generally annoyed when people jump on a big "let's all bash player X because he's not as epic as last season/five years ago/in my wet football dream about him"-bandwagon, and it seriously pisses me off when I actually like the player. ;) I'm also annoyed by all the recent Ballack hate, and I don't even particularly like that guy.

Ah, okay, thanks for clearing that up. Libero makes more sense to me. I'm not very good at footie English - admittedly that's rather pathetic considering that I'm studying English. Need to learn some vocabulary here. ;) But since I already started asking stupid questions - why exactly is it considered old-fashioned/not done anymore?
