Awesome week

Mar 14, 2009 18:37

but I'm still dead tired and enthousiastic so you might see some CAPSLOCK here and there :D

So I left for Metz last Sunday for a week of training about ecotoxicology (basically, it's estimating, mesuring and preventing pollutions in the environment). I do a lot of ecotox in my job, but it's always for pesticides and always behind a desk, so it was great because I got the occasion to learn about other domains of ecotox and about the latest in-field and in-lab methods, to talk to scientists and other people from various industrial companies... and also to feel like a student again for a week.
I won't talk about ecotox here because I'm lazy it's certainly very boring to unconcerned people. I took a few pictures of our lab lessons though (with my phone, so it's still ultra crappy) :

Those are monocellular alguae used in ecotox tests.

EARTHWORMS NOM NOM NOM I honestly like working with earthworms a lot, the test is painfully difficult but still fun.

Using plants for testing the mutagenic potential of a contaminated soil. It reminded me that I too used Vicia faba back then in my last year of studies, with aphids... *kinda nostalgic*

It's a daphnia, I took the picture on the screen linked to the binocular loupe. It was hatching babies.

Ames test, which is done with bacteria.

Newt larvae and adults.

Little newt nooooooo~

MORE RANDOM:

YAY MORE DAPHNIA

A poster with something about hydras, I love hydras (they're fascinating little creatures) but sadly we didn't see any during the week.

Comet test, whose name RULES. It is used to estimate the degradation of chromosoms. It's spectacular and epic.

A test for intercellular communication.

The kind of stuff that makes me love to hang out in labs.

GERMANY IS CLOSE

The planning of the week was very full so we started early and ended late every day, I didn't have the time to visit the city. It's a shame, because from what I've seen, it's really pretty. What I've seen is: the train station, one of the three campuses of Metz, and a good part of the centre-ville by bus because ON THE FIRST DAY WE TOOK THE BUS LINE IN THE WRONG WAY, go us, and WE DIDN'T REALIZE OUR MISTAKE BEFORE 20 MINUTES and we were already in another suburb of the town. We are geniuses.

By "we", I mean me and a girl who works in my previous company, in Lyon; she was in the same department than I when I made my final internship and worked there a few months afterwards. We often talk on the phone but it was the first time I saw here since I left Lyon. And I love her MORE THAN EVER, because. She's 30, and while she knew I was into manga and video games, she wasn't really interested and I never tried to convert her. Well when we met on Sunday, she told me she was reading Dragon Ball (she has almost finished the 42 volumes) and that she was loving it, and that she counted on me to rec her other series. She's fangirling hard on Sangoku and Piccolo <3 (though not in that way, mind you, I don't have the guts to introduce her to slash yet.) I told her to begin with One Piece.

Anyway, the only time we finished early enough, instead of doing some cultural tourism, we went to the Virgin Megastore of Metz I spotted on the bus ride so I could show her a few series, and I told her that I was looking for the DVD of the South Park movie, and she replied that she's a huge fan of South Park too <3 ARGH DAMNIT WHY DID YOU HAVE TO GO BACK TO LYON? I tried to download the first episode of the new season that aired on Wednesday, but the Wifi of my hotel was a HUGE DICK and shut down after I downloaded a few Mo. It did that EVERY NIGHT so I'm a little behind my flist, sorry ): Well at the same time at least like that I was forced to sleep.
By the way the store didn't have the SP movie (NEVERMIND I'm going to give up and buy it on the internet), but I bought Silent Hill 5 for my PC and I installed it this morning. I'm still at the beginning so I'll wait a little before giving my opinion but right after the intro there is a scene close to this one and Joshua keeps saying stuff like "Alex... Over here..." with small giggles and that's deliciously creepy, I love this kid already. Speaking of creepy kids, I also read FMA 93 this morning and I LOVE PRIDE omg, he just keeps being more awesome and badass and... well, cute. ANYWAY, let's move on.

My hotel was okay, except that all the first floor was being renovated, but the rooms were new and comfy, so I'm not complaning.

Since the usual restaurant room was a mess, the personnel brought the breakfast in our room; it was a nice little lady. Of course the morning I was late and I had to open my door still wet and wrapped in one of those ridicuslously small hotel towels, it was a guy who was at the door with my breakfast ._.

FOOD PAID BY THE COMPANY, nom nom nom

Aaaand some pictures of the town, but everything is in the radius of the train station:

The BEAUTIFUL train station itself, by day and night.

Does it looks damp and rainy? Because the whole week sure was damp and rainy.

Those were taken inside the station.

I don't know what it is but it's what I could see in front of my room window.

Damn pretty post office :O

The sort of random stuff I love to spot... when I have the time to wander in towns :(

So, how about I finally watch that last South Park episode, mmm? I hope everyone had a good week!

rl, pics, fma, silent hill, science!
