I have this compulsive habit of reading the preface and introduction sections to any book I pick up. Preface, About the Author, Introduction... you name it, I have to read it before I can get started on the book. I might not get too far into the book but I sure will read the preface. I've been ridiculed enough for it too.
But there are moments when I feel vindicated. Had it not been for this habit of mine I would have missed reading this eloquent piece on nostalgia in the Editor's notes of an issue of
Razor. Yes, I do read the first few pages of magazines too!
"Nostalgia is a seductress of the worst kind. One we can't ignore or deny access. She's a self-serving, manipulative liar who clouds both the present and the past. She convinces us that the best time is a time long ago. She cures ills that truly don't exist. She takes the here and now and puts it in casks, not to be enjoyed until proper aging."
Thanks
chickenchandra for
reminding me of this one!
