Good News and Shitty News

Anna was asleep in a truck on a stretch of highway she wasn’t sure of the name of. The driver was a very old friend-one of the first people to pick her up, actually-so she trusted him enough to catch a few z’s while he was at the wheel. They had just rounded the bend to a truck stop exit when her phone went off, vibrating strongly against her hip, and she jumped to attention, immediately pulling out the phone and placing it to her ear, not caring, for the moment, how tired she sounded.

“Hello?”

“Do you want the good news or the shitty news first?” Ruby’s voice came back at her, and she straightened slightly.

“Actually using a cell phone instead of the psychic network? You’re moving up in the world, Ruby.”

“Just answer the question, Scherlacker,” Ruby replied with a snort.

“Shitty,” Anna sighed, straightening in the seat a little more. “That way the good news can perk me up slightly.”

“Dean Winchester’s dead.”

Now that hit like a punch to the gut. True, Dean hadn’t really trusted her-probably didn’t even like her, but the idea of him being dead wasn’t something that you ever wanted to hear. He was one of those people that you just expected to live forever. And apparently that doesn’t always happen.

“Wow. I mean-how? How did this happen?”

“Meg. Dean got her to possess him, and then when she switched bodies, they used my knife to finish the job.”

“Holy shit.”

“You’re telling me.”

“Well-what’s the good news then?” She wasn’t sure that there was much else that could perk her up after news like that, but she was willing to at least let it try.

“Ben’s not possessed anymore.”

Well, duh. She probably could have figured that out on her own, but she couldn’t help the way that it brought a grin to her face to hear that he wasn’t killed in the process. “That’s pretty good news.”

“He’s holed up at Bobby’s. Wants you to drop by and see him.”

“Bobby got an address?” she asked, reaching for her bag and scribbling the address down as Ruby rambled it off. When she was finished, she looked around for a high way sign, indicating where she was, before turning back to the phone. “Well, he’s in luck. I happen to be heading in that direction.”

“Good. Keep an eye on him, will you? I don’t want him doing anything stupid, and with his genes? That can be a bit too much to ask at times.”

“You got it,” Anna nodded, before hanging up the phone and turning back to Harry. “Think we can make a little detour from where you were dropping me off?”

Harry took the address from her, before nodding and turning his eyes back to the road. “It’ll still take a few days to get there.”

“I can live with that,” she nodded, before settling back into the seat again, curling up into herself as she watched the road pass by.
