In Which Sam and Ruby get Married...

Feb 13, 2010 14:29

Sam had decided to wait until they had Ben back and had made their way back to Seattle before having the wedding. They really were not planning on anything big - let's face it, Sam and Ruby hadn't made a lot of friends in the last two decades. But there were family and a few friends who would be welcome, and Sam was someone who really cared about ( Read more... )

After the wedding was over, Ben had snuck upstairs for a moment to get a quick breather from all the emotional static downstairs. Even with it being happy waves, it still could get overwhelming.

But two pills and ten minutes of fresh air and he was back downstairs, looking to find Anna for a dance or two and avoid getting his cheeks pinched from his Winchester grandparents.

John wasn't going to pinch any cheeks, that he left to Mary. He still wanted to get to know his grandsons though and when he spotted Ben all by himself he started to make his way over.

"Seems like you found the only quiet corner not already occupied by Castiel," John said with a friendly smile.

Ben looked up from his spot where he was holding up the wall and noticed his grandfather walking over towards him. He turned a bit, still unsure of what he was going to be like.

"Yeah. He got the one with the better view, but I'm in arms reach of the main buffet table to it's an even tossup."

"Ah, he wouldn't eat anything anyway." John offered a hand for a handshake, just something to ease them into friendly.

"You enjoyin' yourself? Mary hasn't made a nuisance of herself has she?"

Ben looked at the hand, then took it cautiously and shook it.

"No, I actually had to excuse myself for a few minutes, so I don't believe she's had time to find me yet. It's nice that they let you two out for this. It was probably the icing on the cake for Sam. He hasn't looked this happy since I've known him."

He didn't mind a little hesitation. He hadn't gotten a chance to know Ben yet. He had the same caution in him.

"She will. If she starts to bother you, let me know." He smiled a little. "Yeah, it's a big day for us. I'm glad I could be here for Sam."

"I'm a big boy. I can handle myself." He tucked his hands back behind him, a bit on guard still. "I just was taken off guard. Wasn't expecting to meet family that normally I shouldn't be meeting."

"You certainly look like you can." The boy seemed to have Dean's independent streak, something John was familiar with. "It was meant as a surprise for everyone."

"I guess with Dad now being who he is, it's hard to find ways to surprise your sons."

"It's a bit more difficult than it used to be."

"But I'm sure you can still find a way." The smirk that came to Ben's lips was purely his father.

"A father always knows how." He grinned, one corner of his mouth tipping up. "So, if you don't mind, I'd like to know a little more about my grandson."

Ben's smirk faltered for just a moment and he pushed the bit of sadness away from him. Instead he took a deep breath and shrugged.

"Tell me what you know so far so I can make sure I weed out the truth from the lies."

He caught it, but he didn't say anything. They weren't close enough for that.

"Well, you're Dean's son. That's pretty much all I've been told about you."

"Yeah."

He wasn't sure how much he wanted John to know about some of the things that had happened to him. This wasn't the place to talk about the bad things.

"Let's see. I was born in Cicero. My mom's name was Lisa. We lived there until the Pulse, then moved into Indianapolis since it was safer to live in the big cities. I played baseball and got a job working in a garage rebuilding cars after I graduated high school. Then when I was twenty one, my mom died and told me Dean was my dad, so I came looking for him."

He listened to Ben's story without making a judgment. He'd learned how to do that thanks to the angels.

"Yeah, the car thing runs in the family. I was a mechanic before things happened. I was going to run my own garage."
