It Came Upon the Midnight Clear

Oct 25, 2008 14:08

When Dean woke up, it was dark. But not the comforting kind of dark where you can make out the edges of shapes in the darkness. It was the oppressing kind, that pressed down on your chest and made you feel as though you couldn't breathe. Which would have been just fine, except for the fact that Dean could breathe. He was breathing quite a bit ( Read more... )

Dean did his best to push it to the back of his mind for as long as possible. He waited until everyone in the house had gone back to sleep before he even let the thought cross his mind. He knew Bobby would have wanted to gotten on the source of Dean's sudden rising from the dead, but Dean wouldn't have any of it. It was Christmas. He was going to let his boys enjoy it -- they didn't need to worry about him. Not yet ( ... )

Castiel watched from a distance as Dean was reunited with his family. It was a good scene to watch, reaffirming God's choice to bring Dean back. Dean was going to be very important in the coming months, but for now he could have his family and be welcomed back to life.

But when he walked out from the house on his own, Castiel made his move. He appeared silently, with just a rustle of wings and a small swirl of snow.

"Hello, Dean."

Jinx had been laying awake for the last few hours. He'd wanted to stay outside and guard the house almost as much as he wanted to stay inside in the circle of Alec's happiness. Because something was coming, something that got under his fur and the fur that his master didn't technically have but was there anyway ( ... )

Dean frowned slightly at the man's sudden and unexplainable appearance, and the fact that Jinx, who had decided to come out and join the party, was not happy with what he was seeing didn't exactly make him feel any better. Dean wasn't any closer to actually liking the dog, but he'd done his job in keeping his boys safe when he was gone, and as far as he knew, he hadn't eaten anyone yet, so Dean was willing to give the dog the benefit of the doubt when it came to instincts.

He reached over, rubbing the dog's back lightly, both to tell the dog 'good boy' as well as to try and get him to sit a little closer, before picking up the beer next to him and taking a long sip, still regarding the man in front of him with a bit of unease. He didn't like this. Not a bit.

"I'm sorry -- do we know each other?"

Castiel regarded the Hell Hound with no real expression. One single House was never a problem for an angel. It was the pack that made them dangerous. He turned his attention back to Dean, the reason for his appearance.

"I'm the one who gripped you tight and raised you from perdition." He said moving closer.

Jinx pressed closer to Dean at the man's urging, lip curing up again. Pulling Dean from Hel was good. Awesome really, but that was the last time the angel would be touching Alec's father. Jinx wasn't afraid of churches, holy water or even exorcisms but angels brough bad things with them.

"Gee, thanks," Dean said dryly, getting the meaning of his words. "Is this the part where you tell me that you now own my soul for the next ten years, and I have to do your dirty work, because really -- I'm not all that interested."

Dean really didn't care who or what this guy was. He just wanted it made abundantly clear that he wasn't anyone's little marionette. If this guy thought he was going to pull him like a puppet on a string, he had another thing coming.

Castiel tilted his head to the side, studying Dean intently. They needed Dean for important work. It was clear convincing him was going to be difficult. Dealing with was already proving to be complicated. But he had to trust that God knew what He was doing.

"I'm not a demon, Dean. I'm Castiel, an angel of the Lord."

Great. Just as long as he was an Angel of the Lord who was not standing on the porch.

At that Dean just wanted to laugh. But he wouldn't. Because apparently the man/demon/angel thing had been nice enough to drag him out of Hell, put him back in his body and give him some time with his family. However -- he had no issues with telling the guy that he was full of shit.

"An angel of the Lord? Right. And I'm a virgin."

Ben was by virtue of Immaculate Conception. He'd have to enlighten him on that someday.

"Actually you are. Again."

Castiel knew that was probably not what Dean wanted to hear, but it amused the angel slightly. He knew Dean's past quite well. And he also knew Dean would want proof. So, he sighed deeply and thunder began to rumble in the distance.

Slowly, with near by flashes of lightning, he unfurled his wings, shadowy and black.

Jinx let the growl roll free but held his ground. He was worried. If Mr. Angel of the Lord didn't rein things in he'd wake uo the others. And just looking at Castiel coud hurt Alec.

Dean was going to save the virgin comment for a later date. That wasn't something he wanted to think about at the moment -- the trauma of being a forty year-old virgin was not something he wanted to consider for the present conversation. Instead, he just watched as the wings unfurled, and reached over to scratch the dogs ears softly, trying to calm him down a bit.

If this guy was as badass as he was making himself seem, he didn't want Jinx getting into trouble.

"Okay. So let's say you are what you say you are." Dean wasn't acknowledging it. He still wasn't convinced. "Why did you pull me out of Hell? I don't think you just did it because I'm that spectacular a guy."

The thunder and the light show stopped, the wings just vanishing. Castiel rolled his shoulders just slightly and settled himself. Shows of power were dangerous in this time. The Fallen might sense his presence and that would give everything away.

"God has work for you, Dean." Castiel said, trying to speak plainly. "There are dangerous things in this world and they're gathering together. You need to stop it."

Jinx was still on high alert but he did his best to cut the noise.

God too? Oh, this was going to be fun.

"Yeah, well -- you can tell God that I've got enough problems to worry about at the moment, so thanks but no thanks."

What more did they want from him. His brother was the Antichrist. He had hunted since he was old enough to hold a shotgun. If they were only going to bring him back because they thought he was some kind of hunter extraordinaire and would just rush off to fight the fight that only seemed to end in death for him -- if not his own then someone he cared about -- they had another thing coming.

"Look, buddy -- I know about the dangerous things in this world. My entire life has been about dangerous things, and I've hunted 'em all down. I don't know who you think I am, but I don't know how you expect me to do anything about it."
