I should watch again... but my husband may have already sent it back to Netflix...

In any case, I think it was a combination of all of those things. They certainly made the case that he was crazy about the woman, so knowing that he's kissing that relationship goodbye made him miserable. He was disgusted by his friend, and certainly torn up about that - that was actually the point when I thought, "she was so wrong; they're not alike."

It also seemed like the pain of having a calling - which he was so tenacious about - that created such havoc in the lives of his friends and lover, and finally in his own life. It was such a dilemma for him - an ethical dilemma, a case of such divided loyalties - and yet there was only one answer for him. Only one way he could play it. Even though his friend would be lost, his love would be lost and heartbroken even more, he would be totally screwed. The pain of being the one to pull the plug on all their happiness.

And yes, Collins really pointed out the quandary to Cal, didn't he?

Simm was truly amazing. And Nighy - what a great performance! They were all fabulous. Top notch work all around.
