Usual boring deputy chief fare, really. Mel comes into the office, Mel reads paperwork...

Mel rereads paperwork.

Mel backs up, and leans against the wall facing Makita's cell and sighs.

"Wish I could say I've never wanted to do that."

And now there's a Jet.

With a siiiiigh and a chagrined look. "I brought dice, 'case you get bored."

He sits down, and passes them over-- Steph has vouched for him and the items, so there they go. "You get to roll 'em for me if we play, though. Don't worry, I trust you."

There's a wink there.

Angry? Jet? Pfft. He's not gonna be angry. He's guessing he'd probably do the same in her position. They were far too alike, he and Makita.

Would do and will do, though he'll have a better reason than she did.

She sighs too, "I lost my temper. The guy didn't need to die." It's been a new experience for her too. She's not used to thinking of people in categories beyond friends and threats.

But he dosen't know that yet.

Small blessings.

"Yeah, I know how that is. 'cept I tend not to explode, I tend to plot." He shrugs and says, "What did he do, 'Kita?"

He'll sit and listen.

She's told the story to a lot of people since she got put in the cells, but it still makes her angry every single time.

Makita's fists clench by her side, "He said that what the Reds were doing back home was right."

"Then he's a dirty cowpigfucker," Jet says blandly. "Probably stupid. Or a warmonger himself," he says confidently.

He'd have shot him dead.

"Well, yeah. But he didn't attack me. He wasn't a threat." Well, not to her, anyway. "You don't kill people who don't need killing."

And she tried. Security stopped her.

"That's the stickin' point, yeah," he says. "But he's probably a thread to somebody."

So he can't be very angry.

"Maybe. We didn't get much of a chance to talk about that. Though it was pretty obvious he was involved in some war back home."

"I bet a lot of people around here are. War's not an uncommon thing," he replies. "Me and mine are involved in ours. An' I know a Firebender's in here SOMEWHERE... But I'm not lookin' for him."

Beacus he doesn't know if he couldn't resist the urge to cut his throat.

Makita sighs sadly, "It should be." Uncommon. She hates that it's not.

"We all wish it," he says.

But it just isn't so.

"Something to fight for at least. That others don't have to be like us." Because what they are, it's necessary, but it's not really good. That's something Makita is slowly coming to realize.

He shrugs, and then says, "Maybe. But that's a dreamer's world, I think." he chuckles a little, and then say, "I'll be okay, 'kita. IF we don't look at it that way, it gets too hard to bear."

She nods. She knows he's right on both accounts.

Then she grins, "It's a nice dream though. I think I'll keep dreaming it. Just got to remember that's what it is."

Jet sighs and nods, and leans against the barrier. "Crazy, isn't it?"

A glance, and then on to better subjects. "So my girl, she's jealous of you. I think she thinks we've got a thing on the sly."

There is a long moment of silence, and then Makita has fallen over laughing. After a couple of gasping breaths she manages to get out, "She does? You and me?" Before losing it again.
