In the infirmary.

Carlisle, in the infirmary, is not having anywhere near as eventful of a day as either angel or demon ( Read more... )

The footsteps that come in the door have a distinctly squishy quality to them. A dunking in lake water has that effect.

Castiel clears his throat a bit.

"Dr. Cullen? I find myself in need of your assistance."

The unconscious (faintly steaming) woman he is carrying over his shoulder probably has something to do with that.

"What the -- " Nevermind. "Over here."

Carlisle is all fluid movement here, gesturing to Castiel to lay the woman down on the examination table.

"What happened?" It's demanded over his shoulder as Carlisle reaches behind him for a stethoscope more out of habit than necessity - he forgets he never needs the guise here.

"She fell in the lake."

Castiel deposits his foe on the exam table.

".....she might have had help."

"There was an altercation," he explains.

The earnest expression is somewhat marred by the water dripping off the end of his nose.

Carlisle shoots Castiel a narrow glare when he tilts his ear to the woman's chest to hear if her heart's beating. "I can see that."

No heartbeat. No anything, and there's something far too sterile about how she smells. It's not dead, but other.

Compressions.

"How long?"

Castiel tilts his head. A bit confused.

"How long what?"

When a physical body is not what keeps you alive, one tends to be ignorant when it comes down to the minutes between saving a life and losing one.

"Jesus - just -- "

It's right about then that several things crack into place. One - the smell. Sulfur. Two?

That was more a crack out of place.

Carlisle backs off without much more of an effort. He doesn't have all the answers here and the only fact that makes Carlisle more...pissed off here is that for all he can tell, this woman is dead.

Because of Castiel.

"For an angel," Carlisle breathes, before he chucks his useless stethoscope at Castiel's head, "You are an absolute shit of a lifesaver."

Castiel flinches only slightly as the flying stethoscope grazes his ear.

An involuntary reaction, a byproduct of being in this form.

He glances over his shoulder as the piece of equipment clatters to the floor.

"I take it then, that the host is dead?"

The demon within, of course, is another matter.

Carlisle doesn't think before moving to stand a foot in front of Castiel at closer to his true speed, to most others a blur as he moves from the examination table and his nails bite into his palms to keep from striking some sense into the angel.

"You killed her! What in God's name were you thinking, you -- "

Castiel looks at the vampire impassively.

"My altercation was with the demon."

His head dips ever so slightly in response to Dr. Cullen's obvious distress.

"That the host died in the process is regrettable."

It's not the first time such a thing has happened. It won't be the last.

"Regrettable," Carlisle snorts, the rest of Castiel's information sinking in.

Demon. The sulfuric smell.

Carlisle's losing a bit of his steam here, but he's still watching Castiel as though he just killed a human woman. (For all the information Carlisle has, he did. Not the best way for a doctor to like you.)

Clipped: "You killed someone in Milliways. It couldn't wait for your own world?"

"Technically, I did not. We took the fight out of doors in order to prevent Security from intervening."

"And no. For a number of reasons, I can not fight her on the other side of the door."

Not while the policy on noninterference is still in effect.

He nods at the Crossroads Demon.

"The body will still be animate. The demon is still alive and within the host."

Just so Carlisle isn't taken off guard.

Carlisle's eyes leave Castiel to turn to the broken woman on the table as if waiting for her to twitch and rouse herself.

(The others risen from the dead Carlisle has witnessed? It's usually quite the show.)

"What next?"

Castiel raises his eyebrows.

He's an angel, not a doctor.

"I do not know. Though I doubt she will be particularly happy."

The demon does not like to lose fights.

Short on patience, Carlisle taps his own temple helpfully as a gesture. Think, angel boy.

"Do I have to restrain her? Will she try to kill me to get to you, what?"

"Possibly," Castiel replies.

He thinks a moment longer.

"Though she was immersed in holy water, and likely swallowed a great deal. I think it is safe to assume that she will be considerably weakened."

He looks at Dr. Cullen curiously.

"You are already dead. Do you have serious concerns that she could kill you?"

Carlisle is in no mood for idle curiosity, and the question scans in his mind as an insult more than simple non-comprehension.

"Yes, I can die. Thank you for regarding me so. Now - get the shackles from the top cupboard and be useful, please?"
