It really wouldn't be a Milliways event without a post-event party, would it ( Read more... )

The captain of the Enigmas is sitting off at bit by himself, at the top of one of the sets of bleachers.

Not that Castiel is actively avoiding people. It's just his habit to stay on the fringes of large social gatherings. He's not good at mingling. And this is not like the team meeting or the game itself, where he'd had responsibilities.

In the absence of responsibility, he has, for the moment, fallen back into his usual role. Observer.

But he is happy. Demon bunnies aside, the game was a success. And he is already mentally making a list of repairs that will need to be made to the field. Like replacing second base.

Hrmph.

"Congratulations."

Carlisle manages to be completely sincere and choking on disappointment simultaneously.

It's a talent.

Castiel looks up at Dr. Cullen, and nods.

He may be smiling, ever so faintly.

"Thank you."

"Both of our teams played well."

It had been a close game.

"Do you have a better appreciation for the sport now?"

Carlisle can be genuinely curious about this, at least.

Baseball wasn't new to Carlisle.

"I believe I do. As with most things, it is a much different matter to participate than to simply watch."

"It was fun."

Castiel tilts his head a bit toward the bleacher seat.

"Would you like to sit?"

Carlisle is fine either way, but he can accept an invitation when he hears one and so he sits at Castiel's question.

"Could have done without Duck's transformation. Or the bunnies."

"Her transformation was...."

Show-stopping would be one word.

"Unexpected. She seemed to recover well, though."

He makes a bit of a displeased face at the mention of the demonic rabbits.

"I did not anticipate demonic attack during the game. Perhaps when I make repairs to the field, I should include devil's traps around the outfield."

"I think that would interfere with certain patrons using the facility, wouldn't you agree?"

This is why Castiel and Carlisle can't throw a joint Tupperware party. :(

The comment brings Castiel up short.

Of course. He had forgotten.

He's a little disturbed that he had forgotten, but...well it had been a long and unusual game.

"Yes. Of course. You are correct."

"I am not used to having to take demons into account."

A bit of a wry smile crosses Castiel's countenance.

"Crowley would not be amused."

"No, I don't believe that he would."

And don't think Carlisle hasn't been a little off-put by Crowley's gold eyes. It's distracting.

"Would you captain a team again?"

Castiel thinks for a moment.

"I think I would. I learned a great deal this time."

Like, if you want Grace to bunt, the best way is probably to order her to hit a home run.

"I do not have much experience with being in charge," he attempts to explain. "I believe I could do better now."

"Would you?"

"I think I would as well."

Pausing to consider for a moment, "So long as I had an extra supply of bats on hand in case Stitch is hungry."

There is a short, soft sound that might almost be called a laugh.

"He ate a ball as well."

"Ew? I missed that part during the game."

"Not the one he caught in his mouth," Castiel explains.

"He had...investigated one before his first try at bat."

Stitch's situation with the ensuing string had not gone unnoticed.

"I retrieved the one he caught in his mouth, but Meg thought it best to remove it from play."

It had been rather soggy.

Wince. "Sounds like a wise decision on the umpire's part."
