Pre-Game Stuff

There's a moment, before the game begins, when a baseball diamond may just be one of the most beautiful things on Earth . . . even if it's not, technically speaking, on any version of Earth.

In that moment, the grass is a lush and perfect checkerboard and chalk gleams in not-yet-smudged baselines and foul lines.

Castiel has built up a pitcher's mound, laid bases out with perfect precision, and installed Teja's backstop behind home plate. There is a bench along the first baseline for the End of the Universe Enigmas, another along the third baseline for the Milliways Paradoxes. And at a short distance behind the benches, wooden bleachers rise for any interested spectators. (Or even any bored ones.)

The only thing missing is a outfield fence. Instead there is another line of chalk -- 338 feet from home plate along the foul lines, 410 feet from home at center field. Beyond that point, it's a home run if hit by a human, but there is no end to the outfield for the super-powered players on teams, and the outfielders may chase the ball as far as they choose.

Everything is ready, and in place for Milliways' first baseball game.

There are just a few little ceremonial formalities to take care of first.
