It's the seventh inning and the Enigmas break out their closer, sending Arnold to the mound to pitch the last three innings.

...the new relief pitcher is a kid. Not much older than Sari, even. This is gonna be a piece of cake.

Hey, Arnold is highly trained in the art of baseball.

...Incidentally, Arnold's inner monologue is going a little something like this: The batter is a kid. This is gonna be a piece of cake.

Guess whose inner monologue is closer to reality. Go on. Guess.

Sari taps the plate twice with her bat and readies for the pitch.

Arnold smirks, winds up...and delivers the pitch straight across the plate.

It feels good to be a playa pitcher.

It crosses the plate unmolested by Sari's bat, despite the eight-year-old's best efforts.

Okay, this may be trickier than she thought.

"Good swing, kid," Arnold calls magnanimously. See, he's a good sport.

And now it's time for pitch number two--another well-aimed scorcher.

"I'm not a kid!" protests Sari--then rushes to swing at the ball. Alas, it's too late. Strike two.

"Sure," Arnold replies. And winds up for his third pitch.

This is Sari's last shot at glory and getting one up over Arnold, at least in this at-bat.

Wait for it... wait for it...

Crack. The ball sails in a high arc above the infield, and Sari takes off for first base.

Stitch rushes backwards, neck craned back, ears flattened against his skull. The ball disappears into his maw with a wet GRAUMPH as his jaws snap closed.

Castiel straightens up from his pitcher's crouch, pushing up his face mask.

Oh. Dear.

"May we have a time out?" he asks Meg.

Oh dear, indeed.

"Time," Meg agrees.

"That so doesn't count as an out!" protests Sari from her perch on first base. "He didn't use his hands!"

"He caught it, didn't he? Don't be a sore loser!"

So says Arnold in protest of Sari's protest.

"Um, actually . . ." Meg trails off, stopping to think.

The rules are quite clear. A player makes a legal catch when he, or she, has secure possession of a ball in hand or glove. No caps, no props.

Granted, the rules are written for people for whom catching the ball with their teeth is not really an option, but . . .

"She's right. It's not a legal catch."

Meg's not sure what it is but it's not a legal catch.

"I'm calling that a ground rule double. Sari can go to second base."
