One inning down, eight to go. Still plenty of time for all sorts of things to happen.

Starting with a return of the Enigmas to their defensive positions.

Crowley's standing - no, loitering on the mound, tossing the ball nonchalantly from hand to hand as his eyes track Carlisle's approach to bat.

He'd identified the vampire at a glance, of course. The Paradoxes' captain might not be quite in the vein, ha ha, of most other vampires he's used to running into (the fact that he's out here in broad daylight playing baseball is testament enough to that), but nevertheless. Certain attributes never do seem to change, and it gives Crowley... well.

It gives him a ballpark.

The demon takes a moment, sweeping his foot back against the marker, to gauge distance, speed, and strength.

Snake-strike fast: he winds and pitches.

Crowley is fast; faster than he was expecting, but Carlisle gets a piece of it and he foul-tips wide and to the left.

Carlisle growls at himself, adjusting his stance and preparing himself for the next pitch.

"Getting slow in your old age, there, Carlisle?"

That's a call from the far back center field.

Edward wasn't excepting Crowley's skills.

Never. Not at all. Ssssmmmiirrrkkk.

Edward's not the only one smirking as the ball comes back to Crowley on the mound. After that first pitch, there's a low murmur of anticipation rippling through the audience; ball in hand, the demon rolls his head from side to side in a long, slow movement, and shakes his shoulders loose, playing to the crowd.

Ready? he mouths politely - and visibly - at Carlisle.

Ooooooooo.

That may be a 'yes'.

The pitch is a little high for the swing to be comfortable, but Carlisle is at least expecting the speed of the throw from Crowley -- the ball is looking to make its way to the shortstop and Carlisle sprints at a near-blur to first.

Projectiles approaching at that rate of speed tend to evoke a rather understandable reaction in Stitch. He dodges. The ball is retrieved on its first bounce And Stitch whirls, charging toward the baseline, teeth bared to the gum.

Carlisle is already careening towards second base.

And then he sees him.

Something.

He returns to first base just as quickly.

Back in the dugout, Duo rolls his eyes. "What's he waiting for, the second coming?"

Duo kind of has a point. Crowley's been doing his fair share of shoulder-rolling as well, but no small part of it has been for show; by the time Raph steps up to the plate, it's been just long enough that Crowley can justify shaking out his sleeve with a theatrical flourish to check his watch. LAUGHTER sign, if you please.

But then it's down to business, as Crowley sizes up Raph, making it a point to grin obnoxiously as he does.

On the one hand: ninja. On the other: ex-turtle.

Whatever you say, Raph, imparts Crowley's expression beneath the rim of his (rather fetching) baseball cap.

Of course, Raph knows best. He's probably got this whole baseball thing down, up to and including scoping out Crowley's pitching during the first inning. But, hey. That's okay.

Crowley's been practising, too.
