Second Life is for insane people?

I consider myself a technically savvy dude. For the most part, I understand the internet. But I cannot, for the life of me, figure this shit out:

What the hell is the deal with Second Life? I thought I understood at first; This is an MMO experience without the points, levels, etc. It's a chatroom with virtual, visual avatars. It is all these things. Sure. But then something like this surfaces, and I find myself baffled:

The socialogical implications behind Second Life are so vast, I don't even care to decipher them.

Then again, maybe I do. Can anyone shed some light on this subject? It's been driving me nuts for quite some time now.

If by now you don't know what I'm talking about, this might explain it. It's a Kit Kat commercial:

SOME QUESTIONS:

1. What are the limits of the actual interface? In the above linked article, people are shooting eachother with huge guns. Was this programmed? Are the guns self programmed?

2. The current exhange rate for Second Life Linden Dollars are one US$ to 270L$. Is that higher than more than a few countries? What I'm really saying here is can anyone describe to me the finincial situation of Second Life. I know I saw one lady online who has created a six figure income just trading virtual real estate. Is this the same as selling Plat. for cash in EQ?

3. A political riot in a virtual environment? WTF?

There are more questions, but first I'm going to see if anyone knows what the hell I'm talking about.

P.S.- If you're not sure what the hell I'm talking about, just ask and I'll try my best to explain.

P.S.S- This is the most confusing post I've ever written. The subject is so confusing that everything you write about it is hard to follow/believe. It's like a black hole of incredulity. Sorry.
