I think we are missing a crucial element to the guy's argument. It's clear that he believes games can be "artistic." That is, emulating visual art from other mediums (painting, etc). That's not an issue. I think what he's wondering is if games, as a medium, have the capacity to be in themselves 'works of art,' or if because they are centered around entertainment they are inherently flawed, and will never achieve that status.
He's wondering anyone will ever sit down and appreciate a video game for any reason other than whether or not it was 'fun.' Once that happens, I think, we have art. It reminds me of movements in early cinema wherein people realized movies didn't have to be entertaining to be good.
As for the Wii, yeah, I do think it's growing stale. I've played tanks. A bunch. But if you met someone who put as many hours as the average RPG into Wii Play you would call them a fucking moron, or at least crazy. I'm not gonna shoot balloons and pose mii's for 70+ hours. That's madness.
The system as it stands now, while it will do fine in sales, will start to wane very quickly. If no enduring, worthwhie experiences are released for the system in the next year, you'll see people stop buying. Systems need the support of GAMERS in order to be successful, not just your estranged aunt or grandmother who "feels like they're really riding a cow!"
I think the 360 has exactly what it needs to be successful. It has a launch as promising as the Xbox did, with a few more killer apps on the way. It'll make it.
I like Gears, too. It's written by Eric Nylund and the multiplayer is leaves me playing into the early hours of the morning. What more can I ask for?
i understand his argument, but you have to understand that art should not only please the senses but bring a sense of enjoyment. Art can span farther than just the eye candy. Music is enjoyable (classical that is) to me because of...well a shit ton of different reasons. And to some, sculpting, painting, or even viewing these works of art bring the pleasure. I think that they enjoyment of the 'art' within video gaming pushes far beyond that of just "wow...she looks just like real life" or "freaking beautiful scenery" and reaches the fun factor as well.
And let me get something straight...you thought the 360 had a good launch? it was by far one of the worst in history, and the games were either shoddy or sports games. It is bringing out more great games, yes, great which is better than good for all you slow people, but it by no means had a good launch.
And the Wii...yeah, Crystal Chronicals 2 is supposed to be as epic as the other Final Fantasies, Super Paper Mario, Metroid Prime 3, Mario Galaxy, and Super Smash Bros Brawl coming out month by month by month, almost in that order, gives the hardcore owners of a Wii something to play.
