I don't think about motoric minimalism that often, but often when I do, I share that thought with another person. Here's my thought:
Isn't it strange that the electric organ became such a hallmark of the genre (Four Organs, anything Glass wrote from late 60s to late 70s, etc.)? The basic idea of the style is that sound is constantly being produced. One of the remarkable features of the electric organ is that it can sustain a sound so long as there's electricity. See what I'm getting at?
I've been listening to a lot of Mr. J. Chen's Patterns of Affect as of late. The banjo as a motoric minimalist instrument, now that makes sense! (of course so does the marimba, which actually became canonic...) You can't sustain a sound even if you wanted to, so if you want more sound, you gotta keep plucking a string. Anyway, this piece is far more interesting than this novel realization on my part, even after the banjo drops out.
Fine fine listening.
THIS IS A VERY BUSY MONTH FOR ME.
