FRIENDCATION 2009 PART I: AND YOU'VE GOT THE SEXY LEGS

Aug 06, 2009 10:24

Hey jokers, how's it hanging and is hanging it preventing it from getting wrinkly?
As most of you know I went on a road trip with old Zuhair recently, and let me tell you, it was awesome. So awesome that it had a name: Friendcation 2009, as dubbed by the famous Ben Vargas.
The trip started even before it started, as a group of us went to see Phoenix and the Turtle in LA. Tara and I met at Ben and Kelly's and proceeded to get insanely drunk, or at least I did. We then went out to the show, found Zuhair, and bought more beer to drink during the performance. I vaguely recall seeing Eli, a dude from my dorm freshman year who I hadn't seen in about 5 years, and making Zuhair pull over on the way to his house so I could pee in some parking lot. I also remember getting a call from Tara as we approached Zuhair's house. The conversation went something like this:
Tara: Hey sweetie, do you happen to have my keys?
Erin: No, hon, I gave them back to you.
Tara: Are you sure?! I don't have them.
Erin: Positive, I gave them (checking pockets) back to (finding them in pocket)...but I gave them back to you!
Tara: So you do have them?
Erin: Yes.
Tara decided we could bring them to her the next day, giving her a great excuse to be late for work. After spending the night at his house, Zuhair and I prepared for our trip by eating a delicious breakfast his mom made for us, going to get an oil change, and Zuhair concocting a trifecta of antidiarrheal medicines that would allow for him to be in a car for 7 hours without doing irreparable damage to the leather seats. We then began our journey - to Ben's to give Tara her keys back.

After stopping there for a few minutes and saying a sober farewell to my boo boo, we were really on our way!

We hit up one Del Taco on our way to San Francisco, found out Zuhair didn't know the name of the guy who played Crocodile Dundee, and had a couple stops for gas, but besides that, we took this road trip business seriously, and arrived in San Francisco in no time! When we finally got there, we hit up a local and extremely overpriced liquor store within walking distance, and got 36 Budweisers for over $36. It hurt the wallet, but it was a small price to pay for staying with our old buddy Jeff in his beautiful house. The place was surprisingly immaculate, with a huge living room with a big screen and three comfy couches, and a view from his dining room and patio area of the entire city. As the famous fog rolled in and we bundled up in sweaters, it was clear that Friendcation had really started.

We spent our first of three nights in San Francisco hanging out with Jeff in the house's incredible garage, which was complete with a pool table, a dart board, a piano and drum set - even a lil bathroom so we wouldn't have to trek upstairs every time we had to take a wee. Although I didn't personally set out to have a crazy, drunken, drugged road trip, the comfort level of the vacation allowed for maximum relaxation, and we imbibed consistently, so some of these memories might not be in the proper order. Here's the cutest picture I've ever taken in my life, with the infamous Bonerface tattoo of which I'm so proud to be a part:

On our first full day in the city, we traded twins! Jeff had to work, and Jay showed up at 8 in the morning, opened some beers, had some magic and we all got a pretty early start and headed out for some tacos at a decent hour. The tacos were decent enough for being $1.50, but the best part was getting out and walking around the city. We eventually met up Jeff at Dolores Park, where we sat around for hours drinking tall cans, smoking magic, watching roller derby girls slide down a big hill on blocks of ice, and checking out all the awesome dogs.
Here's Jeff and Jay - 50 points for the first person to distinguish who's who.

Again, we spent our evening drinking (an entire bottle of Irish whiskey) and playing pool and darts, just hanging out.

The next day Zuhair and I drove out to Berkeley, the destination of our first road trip so long ago. I remember the last time I was in Berkeley with Jeff and Zuhair, we smoked some local weed that literally made me feel like I was floating - it was insane! This time, though, was much more mellow. Zuhair and I found a parking spot a few blocks down from our goal: Top Dog! A couple buildings down from Top Dog, though, we remembered where we were, and had some of southern California magic, and let me tell you: a chicken apple sausage and a lemonade on a beautiful Berkeley day can be life changing.

After lunch we decided to walk around Berkeley for a while, a great idea that didn't last long when we found a bar. We figured it'd be a good idea to get a beer to celebrate day 3 of Friendcation 2009, and the beer turned into a pitcher of beer because there was a baseball game on, and we had to have some awesome onion rings. As we were finishing up, we realized that this wonderful bar also had a beer garden out back, so we went out there, got another pitcher and some guacamole! We were drunk!

When we sobered up enough, we went back to Jeff's because we had stolen his keys and he had somewhere to get to. He was waiting outside with a couple of friends, one of whom was Erica - an awesome old friend Zuhair and I had met on our first trip to Berkeley. After some reminiscing, the three of them took off, and Zuhair and I had fun in SF on our own.

The next day I woke up to a beautiful, classic fart by Zuhair. I dubbed it the San Francisco Zuharmonic. It was the perfect way to get us outta there and headed to Portland.

To be continued!
