Giving me more and I'll defy

My layout is doing funny things on my friends page with voice posts - and things get skewed around and I lose half the entries - so if you do a voice post, I may have to temporarily de-friend and re-friend until it gets down the page a little bit so I can read it, at least until I can figure out how to fix it.

Anyhow, this is for klena - and God, but I think it's been ages since I've written the puppies.*

Remus/Sirius | 330 words | PG | Harry Potter

He's learned not to expect much, and it's been years since disappointment has slipped past the careful guard of an unassuming smile, the rigid barriers of stiff shoulders. Even when it comes to Sirius - especially when it comes to Sirius. Sirius says "I'm sorry," like he tucks a few stray locks of hair behind his ears - reflexively, casually, without any thought or meaning behind each syllable. It was an over-the-shoulder sort of thing, tip-toeing around the anger that he must sense, even thick as he is. God, but he was infuriating.

And yet, what could Remus say? That it was all right, fine. That they knew it wouldn't be easy? The rain sounds unnaturally loud against the windows, obnoxiously splintering the silence that hangs over the gloom of the flat's main room. Sirius is sitting on the overstuffed green sofa, hands wringing and twisting, eyes fixed on Remus as he paces the room.

"Remus-"

"No, Sirius," Remus cuts him off, "I think you've said enough." He goes to stand at the window, eyes flicking down to the wet cement sidewalk, three floors below. Puddles are forming in the gutter and children are shrieking with laughter, rubbers and coats unnaturally bright against the gray sky. The air smells wet and stale.

Sirius stands, comes behind him and Remus can see his face reflect in the rain-marked window. "Please tell me you're going to be all right," he says quietly, "I just need to know that you're going to be all right, Remus."

Remus closes his eyes and laughs bitterly, doesn't turn around. "Are you going to be all right?"

There is a heavy silence, and then, the sound of the door slamming. He wishes that he wouldn't prove himself right, that just once he could trust and not have it thrown back in his face. He wishes that - oh, but it's all too late for that. He can do fine for himself. And he can do better.

* If you squint, there's a not-so-subtle nod to Mambo Italiano at the end, because that movie is ON CRACK OMG and I love it.

10:55am: The problem seems to be fixed now, but if it pops up again, I'll just live with it. Oh, technology, why must you hurt my brain so?
