How are you supposed to write a 7-page paper about a 4000 page novel? How!?? Keeping in mind that the professor wants "scope." i.e. He gave us an example of a great paper somebody turned in for his class, except that it only discussed the first part of the novel (Swann's Way). He warned us against doing something like that.
