I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming you're really not aware of the full significance of racism in the US, but suffice to say I would rather have Charlie in his natural state than decorate my yard with a KKK figure. The KKK are active, they are violent and they represent the worst of humanity. No thanks. (Remember, I don't think being PC is bullshit!)
Whenever you can replace the term "politically correct" with "respectful," and the sentence still holds? Well, maybe it's time to look past the bullshit rep that being PC has, and start apologizing.
I think the problem there is that irony requires context - Charlie as he is has the context of being an antique figure quite common to a particular period, so the racist implications of his presence in the yard is bad, but has (possibly excusing) context. The presence of the KKK figure, unless you're aware what he is, and how we feel about him, has no context for the observer unless he or she watches our yard very carefully, and, in fact, knows us. Without that information, there's no irony, there's only the offensiveness of the imagery
