Anyone who has ever visited us knows that we are unfortunate enough to have a lawn jockey gracing the front of our otherwise lovely farmhouse.
From
Random Charlie belongs the the family of the landlords, and has lived there for years. Apparently, the sentimental attachment is strong - we asked that Charlie go away before we moved in, and were refused, and we've been gently lobbying, along with some of the neighbors, for his disappearance since. No luck.
One of Charlie's even less endearing features is that he was repainted in the eighties or nineties by the brother of the current landlords, who lived here for some time. He wasn't a good painter, and the end result is that Charlie looks a good deal like an offensive, racist black lawn jockey in blackface. Everything is exaggerated.
Aside from recently taking a sanding block to Charlie's face, which lessened the blackface effect somewhat, Dave and I have a seasonal scheme to make Charlie more acceptable.
From
Random At night, he carries a burning candle in his lantern. (No, there's no chance of the candle falling out; yes, I'm looking for an LCD alternative candle.)
I think it's a great improvement. Possibly for Christmas he can be Santa.
