I know this is one of those situations where it seems incredibly obvious to us that the woman should press charges, but I have been observing first hand through the case of one of my co-workers why exactly it is that women don't press charges. my friend was being stalked/harassed by her ex-boyfriend, and she filed a PPO against him. Things have escalated so much since then, the police aren't enforcing it at all because they have "no proof" since he's doing things in the dark, with a mask on, or calling from untraceable pay phones, and things have gone from her tires getting slashed, and her getting a PPO because of that, to after the PPO, where he has all his friends call her and tell her she's a slut, he called up to our work himself and told the store manager "if you don't take care of that bitch I will," to her windows being smashed out in a public parking lot, as well as "stank pussy" and "wort" (because the guy is a fucking moron who can't even spell) being spraypainted on the car. But hey, the police couldn't tell who it was in the surveillance tape because he was wearing a BIG SWEATSHIRT! And then, on her first court date, she would have won, but the police officer who was subpoenad as a witness DIDN'T SHOW UP.

This girl is scared for her life. She called the police, she pressed charges, and jack shit is happening. I used to feel the same way you do-- why don't women press charges? I would still encourage them to. But the fact is, there are reasons for why they don't. Internally, psychologically, and knowing that retaliation is a huge and legitimate factor. My friend is doing everything she can, but things have gotten far worse since the PPO.
