[Mitsuhide sounds incredibly thoughtful today. There is good reason for that, which is revealed almost immediately.]I have now been in Vatheon for a year... or, rather, somewhat more than a year. The exact day of that anniversary passed by without me even realising it. I confess I was somewhat occupied with other matters, at the time. Better late ( Read more... )

[Pretty deep, mister.]

All that happened to you here?

That, and more.

[You don't know the half of it.]

Curses are not as frequent as they used to be. There was a time when we would be affected by one every other week, so I have seen many examples of what the Lamufao can do.

[Every other week? And curses? Why has he not heard of this?]

Is a curse like a debuffer? [Lmfao sob. Sorry he's sometimes a gamer.]

Who's Lamufao?

I... do not know what a debuffer is, but I will assume you are a new arrival.

[A brief pause.]

The Lamufao is the coral you may have seen in the central area of Vatheon. It possesses great power, including the power to put us through these curses. A curse is... well. Anything, really. I gave you many examples that affected people directly, but sometimes it has simply brought unusual weather into the dome, or changed what Vatheon looks like.

From what I can tell there are no real limitations to what it can do. A while ago it was damaged, however, and since then the curses have happened a lot less frequently.

A debuffer? It weakens or corrupts your characters. Makes fighting harder. [Don't know if he can follow that. aha.]

That's what that is? Is it like a boss? What if we defeat it, will everything go back to normal?

[There is a long, confused silence. When he speaks, that confusion is obvious in Mitsuhide's tone.]

...the Lamufao cannot be harmed by our hands, and even if it could, it would be very unwise to destroy it. Without it the barrier around Vatheon would collapse... or so we are told, at least.

[Another small silence.]

When you say 'boss,' what do you mean, exactly?

[He knows the word, but the definition he attributes to it doesn't seem to match how it is being used by the other man.]

[Well that makes things harder.]

...

So we're stuck here?

Well bosses are usually villains who cause trouble aren't they? Sometimes there are mini bosses and your have to defeat them to move on or win the game.

Yes. Some leave, but only when the coral sends them back. It is not through their own choice.

[Mitsuhide takes that information in. It still confuses him for a few moments, until memories of a certain curse pop into his head.]

When you say game, are you referring to 'videogames?' I am afraid that invention is from a period many years past my own time. I have only heard of them because there was a curse that turned Vatheon something resembling... what was it?

[...]

A roleplaying game? I think that was what I was told. During that time I had to defeat a huge beast to complete the 'quest' I was sent on.

What else does it do?

You haven't played a video game before? [Like with a controller, but doing it for real sounds fun too!] What kind of time are you from?

I didn't know you could make games come to life. Quests are usually boring, but I bet you had fun!

I could not say for certain. Aside from powering the barrier and the curses... ah, there is one important thing. You must touch it at least once per month to restore yourself. If you do not, you will eventually slip into an unnaturally long sleep.

According to the system most use here, I am from 1582. [His voice grows a little shaky there, again, but he recovers quickly enough.] During the prolonged age of war in my home of Japan.

[There is quiet laughter, then.]

It was certainly interesting. I have yet to work out what throwing money has to do with being a samurai, however.

I thought it was weird when I touched when I first came here. [That explained why he felt relieved.]

15...82. [Calculation with some fingers annnnnd he still doesn't know when that is.] Japan? I'm confused. When was it 1582?

Some games use weird things to attack with?

Do you use another date system, my friend?

[Mitsuhide's voice becomes quiet but kind.]

Well, you may not even be from the same world as I, but... if you are? My era must be at least several hundred years before yours.

[There is a brief chuckle.]

I suppose it is no stranger than my Lord Motochika wielding a shamisen in battle, and that is his normal weapon.

No. [He was still learning math. That's all.]

Sounds like a long time.

...a shamisen? What's what?

A three-stringed instrument. He was stubborn enough to decide that he wanted to use his music to fight, and so, he did. Very well, in fact.

Can't anything be a weapon if you make it one?
