Hurricane Gustav Alert!

Nick + Hurricane in Louisiana .... oh yeah! Nick lives there! I sure hope he's ok...

In case you're wondering, Gustav landed right on top of New Orleans and then drifted straight for Baton Rouge. When it hit Plaquemine, Gustav was a category 1 hurricane, which is the lowest strength of hurricane you can get. Still, a hurricane is a hurricane, and I'm glad I'm not in Plaquemine this Labor Day weekend.

I ran up to Little Rock, Arkansas on Sunday afternoon, and I've been enjoying my "emergency" vacation. We will not be able to return to work until Wednesday or Thursday, so I decided to enjoy my time in Arkansas instead of anxiously waiting to go home in some motel in the middle of nowhere. I took small highways along the Mississippi river to reach Hot Springs, Arkansas. Hot Springs is a quaint little town--extremely colorful, good hiking trails, and the most amazing Chai vanilla shake (best shake I've had in my life!). I spent most of the day hiking the trails around the city, and spent a little time in downtown. Hot Springs is near Bill Clinton's hometown, and the town is proud to admit it. I find it a refreshing liberal town in the middle of the Conservative South.

I'm currently in a Best Western at Russelville, Arkansas. I'm planning to spend the morning at the caves of a National Park, and then I'l be making the grueling 12 hr trip back home to Plaquemine. I'm dreading the trip back home because I'll basically be driving straight through the remaining storms of Hurricane Gustav for most of the trip. I hope that I don't have to work on Wednesday so that I can take the time to detour around the storms.
