2004-2005

The Walworth Barbour American International School in Israel is an independent, coeducational day school, which offers an educational program from kindergarten through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The School was founded in 1958. The school year comprises 2 semesters, extending from August 17 to December 21 and from January 5 to June 10.

Organization: The School is a non-profit corporation registered in the State of Delaware. The ultimate powers of the corporation reside in the corporate membership, which has delegated the policy-making responsibility for the school to a seven-member school board. Four of the school board members are employees or dependents of the U.S. Embassy; the other three are drawn from the Israeli, American and international communities.

Curriculum: The curriculum is that of U.S. general academic, college-preparatory public schools. The School's testing program includes the College Board Entrance Examination Board tests and IOWA Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). Instruction is in English. Hebrew, Spanish, and French are taught as foreign languages. Special education services provide support for students with mild learning disabilities. There is no religious instruction. An extensive after-School program, including arts, crafts, sports, and other recreational activities, serves grades 1-12. Most of the graduates go on to colleges and universities in the United States. The Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools accredited the School in 1998 for a third consecutive ten-year period.

Faculty: In the 2004-2005 school year, there are 45 full-time and 26 part-time faculty members including 61 U.S. citizens, 7 host-country nationalities), and 8 instructional assistants.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2004-2005 school year, enrollment was 428 (Kdg.-grade 5: 179; grades 6-8: 105; and grades 9-12: 144).

Facilities: The modern physical plant includes a 15,000-volume library, 4 well-equipped science laboratories, 5 computer laboratories, 2 art rooms, a dark room, a gymnasium and fitness center, and adequate playing fields and athletic facilities.

Finances: In the 2004-2005 school year, about 95% of the School's income derives from tuition. Annual tuition rates are as follows: Kdg.-grade 5: $13,300; grades 6-8: $14,200; and grades 9-12: $15,300. Tuition rates do not include an annual building fund levy of $800 for all K-12 students. A one-time registration fee of $2,000 per child is assessed. Transportation fees vary from approximately $950 to $2,900, depending on the distance from the School. These fees are payable by check in Israeli shekels or U.S. dollars. (All fees are quoted in U.S. dollars.)
