Don't get me wrong. I liked the movie. But it was just missing something.

I think if Singer had cut about 10-20 minutes out of it, it would have been a lot better. If nothing else, it had all the elements of a great movie.

Well, someone commented that this was pretty much the Superman sequel that Richard Donner (who directed the first one) didn't get to do. Singer pitched the whole idea to him, got his approval, and made the movie in accordance with Donner's style and ideas, because he loved and respected the first film ( ... )

Your impressions sound a lot like what I came out with from watching Batman Begins. I haven't seen Returns yet, but that's pretty high on my list of things to do.
