TWO JOHNS AND A JOE

In an unexpected but utterly delightful twist to my weekend plans, John Mulaney was at Vassar last night! As I said repeatedly said yesterday leading up to the big event, and in the subject line of the email calling people to go with me:  JOHN MFin' MULANEY!!!!!

While we had to suffer through a Vassar Stand-up who confirmed all my worst comedy show fears (overwhelming feelings of shame and embarrassment) there were wonderful *real-life NY Comedians* to be had!

First up was a Joe Mande, described as the "friend" of the man of the hour (ehem John MFin' Mulaney). And he was funny! Not just funnier than Vassar Stand-up, but in his own right! I could elaborate but I think I've got a bit too much of a hangovery headache to try.

And then the moment arrived when the man himself (John MFin' Mulaney!) sauntered on to, and then all freakin' over, the stage. And it was good. I mean, it's always magical to see live what previously you'd only seen on a TV screen or online far too late at night (Benjamin shout out), but seriously, he was hysterical, personable, and really self assured in a refreshingly nondickish way.

Imagine the clip below transposed onto the last stop of the Metro-North line in a room with far more ladies than dudes and full of Poughkeepsie cultural starvation.

What's more, I got some personal validation for my enthusiasm immediately after the show when my friends, some seeing him for the first time, said that he was quite funny and they understood why I liked him so much since he talks exactly like me. Old timey inclinations, long pauses, and all.

Yes! I feel a mysterious and mystical semi-celeb connection (the impulses of a potential stalker?) coming over me. Also, I stole the gigantic poster of his head immediately after the show and it now hangs proudly adjacent to Marilyn Monroe Pink in the back of my closet. Creepy? Most likely yes. But satisfying? Undoubtedly.

I call that classy decorating.
In other news, going to see a Forgetting Sarah Marshall matinee this afternoon, so I have got to do some work (take a crap load of advil and moan on my bed) before heading out for Segel madness.
