So I know I haven't updated in ages. It's mostly because I've been sinking further into the drudgery of this semester and trying to reach the light of graduation at the end of the tunnel.
However, I'm updating now, because in my increasingly distracted/distressed state (thesis draft due FRIDAY) I'm spending way too much time meandering around fandom instead of, you know, working on my flipping thesis.
My most recent distraction has been trying to ignore the gigantic and thoroughly underdeveloped paper I need to turn in on Friday, by compiling a fantasy mix in my iTunes of what Sam Winchester listens to on his ipod. I've really been feeling Sam Winchester lately, and not just his beautiful body either. (*zing?*)
Current standouts in Sam's super moody man pain mix:
"Don't Forget to Breathe" by Beulah
It seems like a quiet, thoughtful, emotive but not absolutely man-painy song. Perfect for the Sam I like.
" Lie awake, time will take
all the dreams worth dying
Close your eyes and the moon will sigh
but is it worth me trying?"
The lyrics can be a little heavy, but the melody is upbeat enough for it go from melancholy to tragic and back again. Besides, which I love Beulah and will shoe horn
them in wherever I can.
"Cold Wind" by Arcade Fire
There's plenty of Arcade Fire I'm adding in the list, but this one stands out cause they did it specifically for Six Feet Under, and what's more even if it's a little repetitive, the tone and lyrics are ridiciously fitting for
season 2 Sam and all his psychic hijinks...
"In the middle of the summer
I'm not sleeping
Cold wind blowing
In the middle of the night they
Try to find me but I'm still driving
...
cold wind blowing
Hey Hey Hey
Something ain't right
Something ain't right"
I once tried to edit a vid to this song, but as I said, the thing doesn't develop much so it's hard to build momentum. And it's not just about the lyrics, it's a oooominous tone.
"When The Lights Go Out" by The Black Keys
Now this song is just awesome, and I love the idea of Sam listening The Black Keys, so there's a bunch more on the list. I like to imagine that Sam grew up with Dean and his Father's music, but he also wants his "college rock," so what's better than the Indie/Blues/Rock intensity of the Black
Keys??? Nothin'
"see the moon
see the stars
from your lonely seat
in your lonely cars
you can be oh so mean
I just can't see no in between
you know what the sun's all about
when the lights go out."
"Black Sheep Boy" by Okkervil River
So, being the Vassarian constantly searching for hipster cred that I am, I feel twinges of guilt including Okkervil River, the most emo and predictable of everything on this list. But damn if they don't click with my image of that shaggy haired emotive mandroid.
"Here I am back home again
I’m here to rest
All they ask is where I’ve been-
Knowing I’ve been west
I’m the family’s unowned boy
Golden curls of envied hair
Pretty girls with faces fair
See the shine in the black sheep boy -
If you love me let me live in peace
And please understand
That the black sheep can wear the golden fleece
And hold the winning hand"
Besides which, even if listening to Okkervil River sort of makes me feel like a self pitying and moody teenager, goshnabit, that's pretty much my relationship with Supernatural in the first place so why not regress?

Anyways, in Mystery Spot, in that alternately hilariously melodramatic and actually heart breaking StoneColdKilla!Sam latter half of the episode, I really sympathized with the guy.
Although, I guess in my case it's less about trying resurrect my brother's tortured soul or prevent him from eternal damnation in a few short months so much as attain a BA.
Still, if I could just put his level of psychotic go-getter / sociopathic OCD spirit into my academic pursuits I'd be set. But then again, Sam's just doing research... I'm talking about creative writing! Come on!
Oh and BTDubs, the program Scrivner is redonculous (sp?), there's no way I'd be getting anything done without it.
(And once again, while sequestering myself in my bedroom to "work" I've been overhearing my roomies' How I Met Your Mother marathons, and my bromance with Brad will never die)
I would say that if anyone reads this they should suggest songs for the Sam Win Mix, but since I doubt it, self high-five!
