For anruik. >:

It begins with a note. The note itself is innocent enough. Al-Cid sends his regards. Makes mention of the weather in Rozarria. Wishes Larsa well in all his ventures.

Gabranth is suspicious.

Then comes a package. Tucked safely inside is a bottle of fine Rozarrian Madhu. An excellent vintage. Larsa is delighted. Gabranth tucks it away until the young emperor comes of age.

Next is the secretary. All emperors need a good secretary, Al-Cid explains in his latest letter, and while a Judge is all very well and good, he rather doubts that Gabranth has the fine turn of tongue possessed by the young lady he has sent.

Gabranth feels faintly insulted.

The last package is the worst. Sweet bonbons, made of the highest quality cacao, imported from some tiny country far to the south. Finely decorated with sugared flowers and candied swirls, Larsa indulges on one or two, and insists that Gabranth enjoy them as well.

Gabranth has never been one for sweets.

When confronted, of course, Al-Cid proclaims innocence. “On the contrary,” he says, all too cheerful, “such gifts are merely for diplomatic purposes.” He waggles his eyebrows and suggests that perhaps Basch had something else in mind. Something base in purpose. And shame on him for thinking such things, when Al-Cid is clearly a man of excellent moral character.

Gabranth looks at him in disbelief.

Al-Cid laughs, then, curling his fingers under Gabranth's jaw, and assures him, in the sweetest of purrs, that he would never act so crudely toward dear Emperor Larsa, as he is underage still. But he implores Gabranth to remain open to other options, turning away with a laugh.

Gabranth chokes.
