Star Trek XI and thoughts on Kirk's motivations.

Went to see the new Trek movie for the third time yesterday. This is a record for me.  I don't think I've ever seen a movie twice before, yet alone three times.

I'm hoping lots of my friends have seen and enjoyed it, because I think this is going to become a new fandom for me, and I'd hate to be there without the rest of you.

I'm trying to work out ( Read more... )

Totally with you on this. I loved the new film. I saw it twice and liked it even more on the second viewing.

The new movie does seem to have split to old guard a lot. Some old school fans are saying 'it's just a lot of big explosions. It's like a Michael Bay film.' Others are loving how fresh and vital and fun it's made the franchise feel.

I'm in the latter camp, and have to confess a particular love of Karl Urban's McCoy, because he's fab.

Some very interesting points made about Kirk, here, including a lot of stuff that hadn't occurred to me. If you write ST09 fic, i'll be only too happy to read it and offer feedback. :)

I may take you up on that offer. I've several fic ideas brewing - and I'm badly out of practice. I will definitely want a beta if I complete one.

I enjoyed the film, which was very silly in many ways, but what jarred was Zachary Quinto. Not because he wasn't a good Spock, but because I kept expecting him to draw his forefinger across everyone else's foreheads and take their powers....

Yeah, I had a bit of that. Not a lot, but every now and then a little cognitive dissonance crept in.

Which is why I'm glad I stopped watching Heroes after the first season. By the time I saw the movie, that dissonance was gone. However, the whole Sylar thing made me really respect Zachary Quinto as an actor, because they are polar opposites, and he plays both of them so genuinely that you would think they were his character 'type'.

I'll be seeing it for the fourth time tonight at the IMAX!!! This is a wonderful essay about Kirk. Personally, I never felt connected until the third watching, when we see a young Kirk driving his step-dad's car -- I never noticed his eyes were full of (unshed) tears at the start. It may be the Hurt/Comfort writer in me, but I think some serious back-story goings on were hinted at in that scene.

And Pike is my new Daddy. Don't ask. He just is.

So there.

I read the book. He steals the car when his older brother leaves home. George can't stand their step-dad any longer.

Pike is fabulous. I love him to pieces.

I loved Pike first. It was only on later watchings that I came to understand Kirk better and to like him also.

Car scene yep - not sure how much of that scene was filmed but as he drives the car along the road he does shout 'Hey georgey' at the hitch hiker so it fits with the rest of the scene having been shot. I know a fair number of cuts were made for time - including Spocks birth which I have seen still from and is why Winona Ryder is artifically aged as Amanda.

I think they should rename the movie Fandom Reboot. It seems like every other person I know is fannish about it. And that would include me.

I was a McCoy person before and I'm still one, gawd bless him but I loved all the other characters, too.

That was the great thing - it worked as an ensemble cast. I really must find a good McCoy icon - I haven't seen the perfect one yet.
