My thinky thoughts, let me show you them
My thoughts on the boys and their relationship. This is all pure speculation--PLEASE, no spoilers in comments past FTBYAM.
- This time apart is GOOD for them. They were killing each other for A YEAR, and they were still killing each other at the beginning of this season. I think it shows incredible growth on both of their parts that they recognize the need for space and time and are doing something about it instead of stubbornly clinging to a bad situation. They each have their own arc to fulfill right now--Dean needs to figure out who he is and what he wants apart from his family, and I'm not sure what Sam's arc is yet, but I think it might be that he needs to finally recognize that he's not inherently evil and can do good in the world. Doing so will allow them to heal and trust again, which will lead to them coming back stronger than ever.
- Last season was Sam vs. Dean, so as much as it might seem like it right now, I don't think that's where this season is headed. I think the angels and demons will try to pit them against each other, but it'll end up failing because, you know, Sam and Dean love each other until the universe ends. ♥
- And on a related note, I don't know yet if the Lucifer!Sam vs. Michael!Dean showdown is inevitable. It wouldn't entirely surprise me if the show went that way and killed Sam and Dean again in the process, but it also wouldn't surprise me if the boys and co. found a way to circumvent the need for it. Either way, that's still not SAM vs. DEAN.
- They WILL get back together. I don't know why this is even a question. It makes no sense for their characters or the show dynamics if they remain separated for the rest of their lives, and I feel like we're headed for a reunion probably around the middle of the season, maybe even earlier. (Like, say, for November sweeps.)
Overall, I'm intrigued to see where this season goes and what choices the boys end up making. It should be one hell of a ride, at the very least. :D
