Something I was thinking about last night...

I have decided that there is a good chance that Danny on Studio 60 is canonically gay/bi and secretly in love with Matt. This isn't just me seeing the potential for homoeroticism in their friendship, either, although Matt's acknowledgement of that is now sort of canon as of the beach scene on last week's episode. :D

Instead, my reasoning here has more to do with the show structurally. As I'm starting to see it, they've set up the whole thing with Danny, Matt, and Harriet almost like a fractured love triangle. Matt and Harriet won't get over each other even though they both know it's time to move on, so they keep having these "moments" where they pretend they have chemistry and/or fight about their non-existent relationship. Meanwhile, Danny keeps doing everything in his persuasive power to distract Matt from Harry so Matt will be free to get it on with him to keep the show from imploding. Because he has to stop Matt from doing stupid things, and he can't lose one of the Big Three cast members over something like this.

Anyway, so every week, Danny keeps trying to convince Matt to let his ex-girlfriend go. It's getting a little pathetic for him, poor dear. He's becoming increasingly unsubtle about how much he dislikes the idea of Matt/Harriet, but he's oddly closemouthed about exactly why he's being so persistent--the show, yes, but he's starting to act like he has a personal stake in it, quite outside of his job--and Matt never asks that I can remember. "Secretly" is the operative word here, of course, because if Matt knew or thought that Danny (still?) had designs on him, he would so throw that back in Danny's face every time Harriet came up. There might even be a throwdown. :P

But he doesn't, and there isn't, and we're left hanging with this thing between them. There's definitely more to this whole Danny/Matt/Harry thing that we aren't seeing yet; given what we've seen of the characters and how they interact so far, I find this theory much more plausible than, for example, the idea that Danny's jealous of Matt on Harriet's behalf.

And hey, coming out and/or confessing love for one's best friend? Automatic sweeps episode! I mean, the network might not like it much, but the gay news and studioslash would have a field day. :D

Nielsen box people, I don't really know how all that works, but I hope you're watching Studio 60 for all of us out here. Because it's one of the the most smartly written and beautifully shot things on TV right now, and I still want to have a show in a year or five.

Anyway. I have a test in an hour and a half, so I need to close this out and go study for a bit. Later!
