on using my Mac.

Jul 13, 2008 00:10

for the sisters, this is for you. when you get angry at your own laptops for being SLOW and USELESS, you can always use my friendly iMac. its pretty easy, u just need to learn a trick or two and you are ready to sail oh so smoothly with it. :D

1. basic technical specs of this computer:
  • 2gb memory.
  • 150gb disk space.
  • can burn only CD. right click + Eject (or  + E)
  • to burn DVD, plug in the DVD writer USB port at the back. open toast titanium app and BURN away!
2. to quit applications (aka programs, but Macs call them applications/apps)
  •  + Q
3. to download using Torrents
  • go to piratebay.org or mininova.org to find it (movies, music)
  • download the torrent link.
  • double-click the torrent (can find it in Downloads folder)
  • it will open up Azureus (the torrent downloader app) and it will start downloading.
4. on using Adium, try it if u r feeling adventurous. if not, stick to MSN Msgr.

5. playing subtitles with your movie on VLC player.
  • first method, drag both the subtitle file (eg .srt file) AND the movie (eg .avi) together into the VLC player icon.
  • if it doesnt work. read next.
  • second method, on VLC, go to File ... Open File ... Browse (click on the movie) .... Check the Load Subtitles file: .. Settings... Browse (click on the subtitle file) .. Ok .. Ok ...
  • can find free subtitles on moviesubtitles.org
6. webcam me!
  • sign up or login with SKYPE
  • (bcos msn msgr for mac is crap and outdated, dont hv webcam capability.)
  • (adium also have a webcam plugin but doesnt seem to work.)
7. on using iTunes
  • PLEASEPLEASE keep my iTunes tidy and neat.
  • NONONO weird characters on the song/artist/album names.
  • PLSPLSPLS rename them, if possible, find the album art.
  • dont delete any of my playlists. esp those Smart Playlists.
8. on converting ur .avi movies to sync with ur iPhone
  • use Visualhub, drag files. Click on Add To iTunes and change the Quality settings ikut citarasa. The better, the longer it takes.
  • Quit visualhub after finish converting.
  • DONT FORGET: after watching the movie on ur iPhone, KINDLY delete the movie from iTunes. BECAUSE the .mp4 file is almost the same size as the original .AVI file and this .MP4 file is located somewhere in iTunes folder. THUS, double files = double space = wasted space = slow computer.
9. using SHORTCUTS. this is VERY VERY useful, trust me.
  • GO TO DESKTOP -> move the mouse to BOTTOM RIGHT.
  • SEE ALL OPENED APPLICATIONS -> move the mouse to BOTTOM LEFT. u can click and move to any window that easy.
    • or you can  + tab to go to other opened apps.
  • SEE ALL WINDOWS of AN APP -> move the mouse to TOP LEFT. extremely useful if u are doing something on Word and u have many pages/windows to work on, you can move to the next window very quickly.
  • All of the ABOVE, are called Expose.
10.  + Space = SPOTLIGHT, TADA!
  • anything u need in this computer will be in your reach within seconds when u hit +Space for Spotlight. its magic. really. thats why i leave my desktop clutter-free from gazillion files and can actually enjoy picturesque wallpapers. heehee.
11. Finder
  • folders and files are found here. drag and drop them to wherever from wherever. it doesnt even take more than a second to move a huge movie from one folder to another. (of course, its an exception if u move it to external drives.)
12. extra USB port on the keyboard.
  • u can plug in your thumbdrive in it.
  • but u cant plug in external hard disks or dvd burner or anything that requires high power usb. so find a space behind the imac, and plug it in. there's only 3. the fourth one is a Firewire port so dont use that.
13. QUICK HIDE THAT WINDOW.
  • u are leisurely browsing handsome guys' friendster profiles, and then, KABOOM, mum barge into the room.
  •  + H is all you need to HIDE the window without quitting the application. its not in your dock either, it just disappears. :DDD just click the icon back and pop it comes back to the screen.
14. Got a huge chunk of photos to view?
  •  + A to select all the photos in the album,
    • click on it and pop, Preview (the img viewer app) comes out and u can use the sidebar/drawer to see the photos.
    • Or drag all of them and drop it onto the Preview icon. works just the same.
15. where the heck is the CALCULATOR!?
  • Hit F12 and boom, Dashboard appears.
  • In there, you will find the calculator, translator, dictionary/thesaurus, sticky note and currency converter,
  • there are other useful widgets you can install.
if there's more that u need to know, u can always Google or ASK me! :D
