Growing Flowers from Sprinkles

Nov 07, 2012 00:30

I was so so excited when I found the casting resin, and even though I have my eye on a few molds on Ebay to buy to use for the resin - I went out and bought a cheap one to try! I actually got a silicone muffin tray, and although the cavities are really quite big, and the resin things it will make will be big (as big as my palm) - some of the stickers I have are quite large, and perhaps this can be an ornament? Or even a school bag charm? Who knows - anyway! Pictures!

This is how it turned out! I tried it out using a green flower sticker (since I wasn't really partial to them) and some sprinkles! Hundreds and thousands! It's turned out quite nice! I popped the bubbles easily by blowing gently on the surface with a straw when it was just poured, but (I don't know if you can see in the picture) there are some bubbles trapped from the sticker. Hmmm . . . but otherwise, all the other bubbles are really really tiny! Half of the sprinkles sank, and the other half floated, but I didn't mind since it gave it a nice effect ^_^ Ah, also, the resin seeped into the sticker a little bit causing dark spots >_< Means that I should have sealed the sticker! I didn't think to before since I reasoned that the sticker had a plasticky surface - heh, proven wrong!

Here is a video of the resin object! I think you may be able to see more details on it this way, and you get to see the back of it ^_^ Pardon for the bad quality, and the loud ticking from my grandfather clock XD

I got super excited about the thought of using sprinkles in resin, and got out my organising box . . .

And filled it with all sorts of sprinkles! I have a lot of different types (due to my other obsession, baking and decorating cupcakes and desserts), so I portioned out part of my baking/decorating supplies, and added it to these boxes, so that I can use them in my resin making in the future! Of course there are still some compartments empty for more different candies XD I've always felt a bit sad (or is it pity?) that decorations and candy sprinkles are eaten, because they can be so pretty! Now I can preserve them in resin! Of course I could have made the clay counterparts of these candy sprinkles - but this way is easier (and faster! and I won't go cross-eyes making tiny tiny things!), and I like the idea of using real candy to make jewellery or charms that can last forever! That is it for now, I will order and wait for the smaller molds to get here before making more resin things!
