There are plenty of things that I could write about, in particular my trip to london, but just a short and specific update for now.
I have an interview next week for an internship in the curatorial department at the Crocker Art Museum. This is good.
Also, had a talk with the director of the gallery I'm at now last saturday. She had written my letter of recommendation for the internship application, and she asked me if I'd hear anything yet. I said no, and I wasn't sure if I would since the internship posting had said that the position was for a student. She went on to say that she wanted to help me get my foot in the door there, because she anticipates (as do I) that they will be hiring more people as they get ready to open the expansion. They will be opening a huge expansion around this time next year that triples their exhibition space, and I was thinking that they would need to take on more staff..at least temporarily..to deal with it. She has also been thinking the same thing (especially since she is friends with the executive director, and knows that she has been filling out applications for funding for new positions).
Since then she has spoken to the director about me and given her my resume, and she informs me that she will probably want to meet with me sometime. This is also good. I'm trying not to get too excited about this, but it's hard not to.
Oh, also, she dropped some hints about what she might be pursuing when the gallery closes in late December. She mentioned that she wanted to stay in the sacramento area, and if things work out the way she plans she would like to end up somewhere where she could take her volunteers with her. This coupled with something I hear Wendi (the education director) say makes me think that she might be working on opening her own gallery. If that were to happen I don't know if there would be a paid position in it for me or if it would still be volunteer.
Anyway, at least now I've got a few possibilities to keep me optimistic right now, even if both of them are very unsure and nebulous at the moment.
I would be very content to stay in Sacramento if I could actually live in Sacramento, downtown or midtown, and if I had an interesting job. I also imagine (even though I've never thought the crocker was that great of a museum) that this would be a very exciting time to work at the crocker. They've never had particularly good exhibitions, but that's probably because they've had such limited exhibition space, and therefore were limited in the shows that they could handle. With the new space they will have many more options. Also, the new building is going to look quite fabulous, especially positioned right next to the victorian mansion that is the museum now.
Anyway, that's what's up on the job front. Oh, and got promoted to a shift leader at the record store, which is a little more money, so that's good.
