Balder was the most beloved out of all the gods, the son of Odin and Frigg who ruled the land of the Aesir (Asgard, also know as the heavens), and he was the most beautiful as well. Loki, on the other hand, was a half-god, half-giant whom the gods allowed to stick around because he and Odin had made a pact and were blood brothers. He was one of the most hated due to his Trickster nature and evil ways, always causing trouble for the Aesir. Complete opposites, plainly.

Though, Balder fell because of Loki's treachery. Loki was jealous of balder, see, and sought to kill him. The Norns, who could see into the future, past, and present, warned Odin that Balder was going to die and become Hel's (Hel being the ruler of the underworld, Niflheim). He told this to his wife and Frigg went to every corner of the planet asking the plants, rocks, rivers, etc to not harm her son. They agreed, for Balder was so kind and wonderful he was loved by everything. But Loki found out, disguised as an old woman, that Frigg hadn't asked the mistletoe because it seemed too young. So Loki went and gathered mistletoe, making a dart out of it.

Hod was also a key player in this. Hod was Balder's blind brother. The gods had made it a game to try and hurt Balder and laughed when they failed because everything would simply move away from their path towards the young god, and since Hod couldn't see he was left out of the fun. Loki saw this and strode towards him, calling out his greetings and asking him if he would like to join in the fun. Loki then told him he would give Hod a weapon and point him in the direction where his brother was and, on Loki's command, Hod would throw the dart. Hod, who didn't know of Loki's plan, agreed to this and let the mistletoe dart fly. It struck Balder through the chest, killing him.

... After a while, the gods found out about Loki and sought to punish him and, after a long while, finally caught him and tied him down near a venomous snake that, every day, would drip poison that burned his skin and cause much pain. He would be sentenced to this life of torture until Ragnarok arrived.
