Notes: This was written for the contest at

The sky was black, the world covered in darkness. The moon had been eaten it seemed, by the wolf in the sky that Vater had always talked of, and the boy could not even see his hand in front of his face. Suddenly, a light shot across the sky. Unseen astonishment was on both of the brothers' faces, and the younger of the two scooted closer to him. The lights kept flying by, just one and two at first, and suddenly it was a race of hundreds. The world must be ending, thought the older of the two boys, because he had never seen something so awesome. Both of them stumbled and fell as they made their way through the darkness back to their house, wanting their father to quell their fears.
"Vater, the lights are falling! Is that end of the world thing you talk about coming?"
He shook his head, watching the light show from the door.
"No, it's natural. When the lights feel themselves dimming, they shoot across the sky in one last effort to show the world that they exist. It's a pretty sight, isn't it?"
The two boys huddled by their father's legs and watched the lights streak across the sky, comforted by his presence and the knowledge that he would be with them still. It was kind of pretty, the younger thought, and felt a new sense of wonder for the world that he had still much to learn from. His brother was in the same wonder, though he hid it well from his brother later that night, when they climbed into bed.
"Wasn't it beautiful, Bruder?"
"Nein, it was just a bunch of lights going across the sky. Nothing special."
"I thought it was romantic, the way Vati said that they were giving their all to give the world their last goodbye..."
"... Go to sleep, Bruder."
