Title: Child of the Wilderness
Characters: Young Prussia (very young), Germania
Notes: Balder was Odin's son, the most beautiful and most beloved of all the gods. He was killed by this brother the blind god Hod after Loki, the Trickster god, gave him a dart of mistletoe (the only thing on earth not asked to never harm Balder by Frigg, who thought the plant was too young) to throw at him.
He was the prettiest child he had ever seen. Hair as white as the snow, eyes as red as the blood that coated the usually sparkling mass. Tears rolled down from those crimson eyes, falling onto the dirtied clothes he wore. The boy's skin was as pale as the moon in the nighttime sky, looking over the inhabitants with a full face. Had this boy been older, he would've been called Balder, after the most beautiful and most beloved god the earth had known. But he was just a child, a lonely little thing as he looked up at the giant in front of him. The giant knelt down, holding out a hand gloved in leather to the beautiful boy. As wary as a rabbit, the small boy took the man's hand and looked up, wiping away the escaping tears with his free arm. The face he saw showed no emotion, yet the eyes showed a softness and awe. The man stood, and as he did the boy came up with him, their hands loosely entwined.
The forest was large to the boy, a strange and fearful place full of shadows and voices that belonged to no man. But the giant didn't seem afraid, so he decided he wouldn't be afraid either! Putting on a face that nearly mimicked the giant's, the two strolled through the woods with only the sound of the leaves rustling in their wake. At last they reached a path well-traveled, and atop a sloping green hill sat a house, small in size yet the boy could feel something bigger hidden inside. The two reached the house and the giant pushed open the door.
"Welcome home, son."
