Japanese people, especially men, like their chocolate bitter. And I mean really bitter. This as evidenced by the 99% cocoa content of this chocolate bar. The headline at the top reads "For adults who want healthy and delicious chocolate."
Then there's this warning label at the bottom: "This is dangerously bitter chocolate. Your mouth may become a little dry while eating. The makers recommend consuming this chocolate along with a sweet beverage."
This recommendation seems kind of counter-productive to the whole "Eat bitter!" premise. But who am I to judge?
With that mentality of not judging things, I bought this chocolate and tried a piece. What I should've done, however, is come home, took a big handful of cocoa powder, mixed it with water, and then let it harden and eaten it. I would've gotten the exact same experience and saved 250 yen. But then I wouldn't have the spiffy box that I will keep forever in remembrance of this moment.
If anyone wants any really bitter chocolate and a possible cocoa overdose, come by my apartment and I'll gladly indulge you. I'll even serve you a sweet beverage with it, preferably sugar water.
Trust me, you'll need it.
