Well, it really started cause I was taking a Japanese course at my college. Every semester, the International Office has a day where they'll set up outside and sort of advertise the Study Abroad programs. Me and my friend, who was also in the Japanese class, happened to walk through. It was more of an impulse that we decided to go to Japan. My friend looked at me and said "hey, you wanna go to Japan" and I responded "sure". And thus began the long process of applications. If you're planning on going as part of a Study Abroad program, I suggest you start early. You have to chose the school you want to go to and apply there. Start applying for study abroad scholarships as you apply for school applications. I suggest going for the Jasso scholarship. It pays for your airfare there and back and also gives you a monthly allowance of about $600. It pretty much pays for you to be there. I didn't even know about this scholarship until it was too late. There are other scholarhips as well that you can apply for. Since I live in the state of Georgia, I already had scholarships to take care of my housing and tuition. If you don't already have one, get your passport and Visa stuff taken care of. I don't think you can get your Visa until you are accepted to the school, so getting accepted early would be a good thing. Oh, and your plane ticket. In case you don't get Jasso, which you should really strive for anyway, but just in case, get your plane ticket a month or two in advance with the cheapest possible. I got really lucky and booked one about two weeks before I left at under $1000. But I got lucky. I hope all that helped. It seems like a lot, and it is, but it isn't overwhelming.
