"I would die for you"

I know this is supposed to be romantic, but seriously -_-.

Whenever I read these words, I shudder. What use could I possibly have for a dead person? Why would I want anyone to die for me? If I asked them to, would they really go kill themselves? Who was the first person to think this was romantic, and what kind of people repeat

Maybe there is the connotation of "if there would be a situation where one of us can live and the other must die, I would let you be the one to live"? (oh, such democratic relatinship! XD)
But yeah, I don't think sane people would offer their life like that so they would kill themselves if asked to -_-;
