just a few

I'm not a prolific icon maker, but upon noticed the similarities between high-minded literary characters I like, I made a few.

For those that are not familiar with Man of La Mancha, the song goes:

Hear me now, O thou bleak and unbearable world:
Thou art base and debauched as can be
And a knight with his banner all bravely unfurled
Now hurls down his gauntlet to thee!

I am I, Don Quixote, the Lord of La Mancha!
My destiny calls and I go.
And the wild winds of fortune shall carry me onwards
O whithersoever they blow.
Whithersoever they blow,
Onward to glory I go!

Hear me, heathens and wizards and serpants of sin:
All your dastardly doings are past
For a holy endeavor is now to begin
And virtue shall triumph at last!

I am I, Don Quixote, the Lord of La Mancha
My destiny calls and I go
And the wild winds of fortune shall carry me onwards
O whithersoever they blow.
Whithersoever they blow,
Onward to glory I go!

Don Quixote is a man living well after the age of knights and chivalry who becomes obsessed with the idea of righting the impossible wrongs of the world, and takes on the ludicrous guise of a knight-errant to sally forth and... y'know, punish evil. Of course, then as now, cruelty and deception are the way of the world and the way the world wants to be. They even die the same way. At the very end Don Quixote renounces all chivalry (much like when Rorschach removes his face and tells Dr. Manhattan to "do it!") and dies, "sane" and broken.

If that's not another incarnation of Rorschach 500 years ago, I don't know what is.

Inspired by a comment from serena_took:

To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go

To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To try when your arms are too weary
To reach the unreachable star

This is my quest
To follow that star
No matter how hopeless
No matter how far

To fight for the right
Without question or pause
To be willing to march into Hell
For a heavenly cause

And I know if I'll only be true
To this glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest

And the world will be better for this
That one man, scorned and covered with scars
Still strove with his last ounce of courage
To reach the unreachable star

and, you know, this just made me laugh:
