If you thought Heath Ledger’s Joker was a head case, wait until you get a gander at the tortured superheroes in “Watchmen,” the big-screen adaptation of the DC comic.
Of the film’s seven protagonists, none is more messed up than Dan Dreiberg, aka Nite Owl II. As played by Patrick Wilson, this pudgy eccentric has felt powerless ever since his wings were clipped by a fearful public. Stripped of his superhero status, Dan has been floating aimlessly through life.
“In (the comic), Dan is sort of likened to a soldier coming back (from battle) and not feeling part of society anymore,” says the 35-year-old Wilson, who’s best known for his turns in “Little Children” and “Lakeview Terrace.” “(He) doesn’t understand where he fits in. He’s like the misfit in all of us.”
Dan is, in all senses of the word, impotent, at least until he dons his costume and transforms into Nite Owl. Almost instantly, he’s a force to be reckoned with.
